Burn Injuries
Burn injuries, can be extremely serious. The medical profession has only recently begun to understand the problems associated with burns and the best methods of treatment.
Many burn injuries can be prevented, especially injuries to children and older adults. Children under 5 years of age suffer approximately 20% of all burns each year, for the most part due to scalding by hot liquids, usually water. About 10% of all burns are suffered by older adults, due mostly to scalds related to hot liquids. Of the 40,000 burn injury hospitalizations that occur each year, 60% are admitted to hospitals with specialized burn trauma centers. For children under 15 years, over 80,000 visited a hospital emergency room for treatment of burn injury in 2003.
